Lochlea Harvest Edition 3rd Crop Single Malt
$55.00
Lochlea operates differently than most Scottish distilleries. Rather than source barley from a network of farms, Lochlea grows their own on the same estate where the distillery sits, in the Lowlands south of Kilmarnock. It's the kind of closed-loop operation that sounds romantic but rarely makes economic sense—unless you're already running a working farm. The Burns family has been farming this land since 1942, and the distillery, which opened in 2018, is a natural extension of that. Harvest Edition marks each year's barley crop with a limited release, and this third iteration showcases what the 2023 harvest delivered. The maturation here leans heavily into dessert territory. This expression pulls together casks that previously held Port, Bourbon, and Oloroso Sherry, a trio that amplifies the malt's natural sweetness and adds layers of dried fruit, toffee, and baking spice. Expect dark berries and plum from the Port influence, vanilla and honeyed cereal from the Bourbon barrels, and nutty richness courtesy of the Oloroso. The result is a whisky that drinks richer and more indulgent than its age might suggest, with bright fruit notes cutting through the sweetness to keep things lively rather than cloying. This is a bottle built for after dinner. Pour it alongside a berry tart or dark chocolate dessert, or let it stand in as dessert itself. It's approachable enough for someone new to Scotch but interesting enough for the collector who wants to track how each year's crop expresses itself differently. At Off Premise, we stock single malts that tell a story beyond region and peat levels, and Lochlea's farm-to-glass model makes for a compelling one. The Harvest Edition series won't be around forever—each crop is finite, and once it's gone, that particular expression is done. If the idea of tasting a specific harvest appeals to you, this is worth grabbing now.
