Giuseppe Savini "Rondineto" Pinot Grigio
$18.00
Giuseppe Savini has been farming the hills of Abruzzo since 1949, and the family's approach to Pinot Grigio is refreshingly old-school: let the site do the talking and get out of the way in the cellar. That's exactly what's happening in the "Rondineto" bottling. The fruit comes from the estate's own vineyards around Morro d'Oro and Notaresco, in the province of Teramo, where south and southeast-facing rows sit at roughly 250 meters on calcareous clay soils, caught in that sweet geographic spot between the Apennines and the Adriatic. That push-pull of mountain air and sea breeze is a hallmark of Teramo's winemaking, and it shows up here as real freshness rather than the flat, neutral character a lot of mass-market Pinot Grigio settles for. In the cellar, the grapes are pressed gently and fermented cool, around 17°C, in stainless steel, then rested in tank to lock in the fruit character. No oak, no shortcuts — just a clean expression of the vintage. In the glass, "Rondineto" is straw yellow with golden highlights. The nose opens with ripe golden apple and pear, a streak of lemon zest, and a whisper of spice underneath. On the palate it's soft and easy-drinking but not flabby, with a light mineral edge that keeps things honest and a crisp, citrusy finish that makes you want another sip. This is a Pinot Grigio built for actual drinking occasions, not just sipping solo on a patio (though it's great for that too). Pour it alongside grilled shrimp, a plate of fresh mozzarella and tomatoes, lemony roast chicken, or a simple seafood pasta. It's also an easy match for aperitivo hour — cured meats, olives, a wedge of young pecorino. We've got it in stock at Off Premise, and it's the kind of bottle that overperforms its price point: honest Abruzzese winemaking, a real sense of place, and nothing getting in the way of the fruit.
