Giuseppe Savini "Rondineto" Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC

$18.00
Giuseppe Savini has been farming Montepulciano in Abruzzo's Teramo hills for generations, and "Rondineto" is the kind of bottle that shows what the grape does when nobody's trying to dress it up. No oak here, no shortcuts — just fruit from the family's own south- and southeast-facing vineyards in Morro d'Oro and Notaresco, grown at around 300 meters on calcareous clay that gives the wine its backbone. The grapes come in mid-October, get a gentle press, and spend 15 to 20 days macerating on their skins before finishing fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel. That extended skin contact is doing real work here — it's where the color, the tannin structure, and a good chunk of the aromatics come from, since there's no barrel adding anything on top. In the glass it's ruby red with violet edges, and the nose leads with blackberry and red currant, floral violet, and a crack of black pepper. The palate is round and full-bodied, with velvety tannins that have clearly benefited from that longer maceration, juicy dark fruit running through the middle, and a savory finish that lingers rather than fades fast. This is an everyday-drinking Montepulciano in the best sense — built for the table, not the cellar. Pour it with a Sunday gravy, grilled sausage, a braised short rib, or really anything involving tomato and pork fat. It's also sturdy enough to stand up to aged pecorino or a plate of charcuterie if you're keeping things simpler. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo has a reputation as one of Italy's best values, and the Savini family's hands-on, stainless-steel approach is exactly why bottles like this keep that reputation intact — honest winemaking, no oak bill passed on to you. We've got it in stock at Off Premise, and it's the kind of red worth keeping around as a weeknight pour that still feels like something when guests show up unannounced.
