2022 Domaine du Chancelier Maison du Chancelier Pommard La Croix Planet VV
$135.00
Domaine du Chancelier's 2022 Maison du Chancelier Pommard La Croix Planet VV is single-village Burgundy from 50-year-old Pinot Noir vines planted at 10,000 vines per hectare in the clay and limestone soils of Pommard. The "VV" designation marks these as vieilles vignes, and the tight planting density combined with simple Guyot training concentrates fruit and limits yields naturally. This is village-level Pommard farmed with the rigor of a premier cru site, all of it hand-harvested and sorted with the kind of attention that defines serious Côte de Beaune winemaking in the 2022 vintage. The domaine ferments and ages the wine entirely in 500-liter oak barrels with no sulfur added during the process, allowing native yeast and the underlying terroir to drive the profile without interference. The wine rests on its lees for twelve months, building texture and integrating the fruit with the barrel influence slowly. Clay-limestone topsoil is classic Pommard geology, and it delivers structure and a savory mineral spine that keeps the wine from tipping into jamminess. The lees aging gives the mid-palate a creamy weight without sacrificing the bright red-fruit lift typical of the vintage, a balance that reflects both the producer's restraint and the vineyard's natural acidity. The palate shows dark cherry, dried rose petal, and a thread of graphite that runs underneath the fruit. There's enough grip to handle duck confit or a marbled ribeye, but the tannins are fine enough that you can open it now with roasted mushrooms or a hard cheese board. The wine benefits from an hour in a decanter if you're drinking it young, or a few years in a cool cellar if you're patient. The structure suggests it will hold for five to seven years, developing tertiary notes of forest floor and cured tobacco as the fruit integrates further. In stock at Off Premise in Lincoln Park.
